The University of Sri Jayewardenepura is located in a beautiful setting at Gangodawila, Nugegoda, Sri Lanka, and fifteen kilometers away from Colombo. The University is committed to the pursuit and transmission of knowledge through teaching, scholarship and research and active service to the community in an environment which values creativity, freedom of intellectual thought and expression, equal opportunity, fairness and professional growth.
University of Sri Jayewardenepura was established by the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka under the provisions of Universities Act No 16 of 1978. It is an autonomous university established under the provisions of this Act and the following subsequent amending Acts.
Department t of Physical Education
The physical Education Division of University of Sri Jayewardenepura was established in 1968 with a view to providing an opportunity to students to take part in different recreational and sports activities and to develop personalities and qualities of team work through such participation.
The Centre is managed by a director and instructors.
The overall aims of the centre include
- To provide facilities and equipment to students who excel in sports in order to be competitive at University, National and International level
- To provide basic sports and recreational facilities to all students and staff.
- To increase social harmony in the University by providing opportunity for social interaction through sports.
- To establish a complete and well equipped sports centre within the university
The Center could be used as an income generating activity by providing the facilities and services of the Center for external agencies for a fee. At present, the Center provides opportunities for over 29 games such as athletics, volleyball, netball, hockey, basketball, badminton, foot ball, weight-lifting, wrestling, carom, chess and table tennis etc.
The facilities available at the center currently include two playgrounds out of which one has space for 400-meter running track while the other has limited space with a matting wicket for cricket. Courts for basketball, volleyball, football, elle are also available.
Sports Facilities Available
The physical Education Division of University of Sri Jayewardenepura possesses lot of sporting facilities which are available for sports & recreational activities. These include well managed ground to be used for athletics, football & rugby, 50m swimming pool, outdoor basketball & netball courts, and a gymnasium.
